The next few comics will simply continue to zoom out of that frame

Since Courtney just gave you all an opportunity to ask her questions about the artistic process, I think now would be a good time to let you all ask me about the writing process. More specifically, ask me anything about the world of Idenau. I won’t be able to answer a lot of questions, to avoid spoilers, but I’ll try my best to answer the ones I can.
Although, it may have to wait until after I get out of work.
Altermentality:
It’s Victor’s first day of an internship, so wish him luck!
He also thought we should have the first panel lest we forget that our Skärva is still a jerk.
Oh, look at that big ol’ baby covering his eyes from the wonderful world of literature.
I do have a question about the writing development: how many revisions of a scene do you go through until you’re satisfied with it? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought about a fictional scene with different elements (or characteristics if you will) yet remain a little dissatisfied with one or two of ’em.
Depends on the scene. Honestly, most comics are first drafts. However, some get re-written a bunch before being published. It depends mostly on the care with which a scene has to be delivered in the first place, plus how much forethought I’ve put into it beforehand.
His friends are books…I can respect that. (I can’t wheres my flamethrower) NO! (YES) *Mind battle*
I can respect it, and relate to it. Especially in middle school. And if I outlive Victor, that’ll be me again. By that time, most people will be like “What’s a book?” so I’ll be even more of a weirdo.
*huff huff* sorry for a late response, mind battles are draining, my other half will be out fer a little while. I was also like that in middle school, books are a lot of the time better than friends. They take you to worlds you can never imagine (Sci-fi fantasy) or read murder mysteries or just read dirty dirty stuff. Books are just amazing. (urg what happened?) Crap.
I wouldn’t say books are better than friends, but in middle school I was like “WHAT ARE FRIENDS”
And now, a Pagemaster crossover.
Man, a few years back, Rebekah and I watched that movie again. It really wasn’t as great as I remembered it. D:
did the first get cursed before or after the second was born? cuz i can see how having an evil father and getting turned into a shark-man would drive someone crazy and make them devote both their life and after-life to finding a cure. also, what is the proper way to pronounce Skarva and Lorelei?
Victor doesn’t want us to talk about that yet. I’m sorry! I Wish we could, but that’ll be revealed in the comic itself at some point…
SCARE-vuh
LORE-uh-lie
Also, DERK
awww.
well at least i got one question answered, and i was pronouncing them right the whole time! so how did you decide on all the character’s names?
Tiburón is Spanish for shark, so Tiberius seemed logical. Skärva means shard, which also seemed to fit his personality. Uh… actually, this would be a very long comment if I explained every character’s name, so let’s just say we didn’t put too much thought into them. The names just kind of happened naturally. Maybe Courtney will go into more detail, or we might do a thorough list later on.
OH BOY here we go!
Ok so Lorelei is my favorite name for a female, it has been ever since I first encountered it when I was playing Pokémon when I was like 7. The name actually comes from a German legend, so there are elements of magic and mystery to it as well!
“Derk” … this is kind of weird, but my brother and his best friend sort of have their own language, or at least so much slang they’ve created between them. “DERK!” is something they would yell out whenever someone else does something goofy, or something weird happens… man, I can’t even hope to understand them. It’s kind of like “derp!” except there’s more to it than that. Anyway, they are so loyal and close to each other, and ultimately inseparable; it is something truly special out of all the friendships I have observed in this world, and it reminds me of how Derk is with Skärva and Lorelei, so I decided to use their word.
Davis, I just thought sounded like a good name for a doorman. That’s… all there is to it.
Ecta… we are, I MEAN SHE IS not very creative
Well I don’t want to give away evveerrything all at once, but suffice it to say that the names in our comic are a blend of subtle meanings and complete randomness. And that’s how we like it!
I always pronounced it as SCAR-va! Oh well! Guess I’ll just…
Keep pronouncing it that way because I’m very forgetful!
-RU =)
Took me a second to see that was Derk.
Also, that giant moth looks like the giant dead moth that was clinging to the wall for a week at my workplace.
O___O It’s really not giant, it’s just close to the viewer.
OR IS IT. No wonder Derk is so afraid of this place.
Anything about Idenau?
OK…is it divided into regions? Think about this, we know Veronika is princess…but princess of what, exactly? Where? All of Idenau or just a small portion of it? Are there unexplored wastes that Blank and other heroic types are bringing under the Royal Family? We saw the mountain hamlet way back when and they seemed pretty independent, but that could just be me. There’s snowy regions, there’s a volcano, there’s Wilderfell, all these places. How large is Idenau, how many areas and regions are within?
Long story short: can we see a map of the place?
One day there will be a map, but we haven’t figured it out 100% yet. It’s hard to talk about this without spoiling things, but Idenau is essentially a large continent. There are many regions, but they are all essentially ruled by the king.
Whenever I go to bed at ten-ish and I wat for you to upload, if its ever let one minute I think “Oh no! What if Courtney and Victor DIED in some horrible accident! WE WILL NEVER KNOW HOW OT ENDS” And then I shun myself for thinkking things my psyvhiatrist warned againt and by then its uploaded and OK and my life jas meaning again and I think “Its ok if they upload three minutes late, its not like they sit at the computer counting down to midnight every night just to please m.” And then I read the comic and it makes me happy and I go to bed smiling. And then I wake up and forget what the comicwas aand read it and smile some more but then I forget about it and it cheerios and watch Phineas and Ferb or read one oof y “friends”. The end
(The Fourth themed cereal would be cool. I would bby it to jst eat the skarva marshmallows screaming “BE NICE TO LORELEI YOU JERK” It would be very fun. I would invite everyone over ffor a skarva eating party. Yay!
You are crazy. I love it. ^_^
Sorry we were a few minutes late last night. If we’re going to be really late, I’ll put up an announcement.
Marshmallow Ectas please! She already looks like a marshmallow.
Ooh, I know what would be a great cereal. Frozios >___> And don’t forget to eat some fruit Slices.
If there’s one thing I aim for, its craziness.
Ecta ice sculpture would be amazing.
“Frozios, Frosty Flavored Cereal!”
DON’T YOU DARE EAT SLICE.
*puts the tartar sauce back in the fridge*
*Glares*
I know his feeling. Growing up, books (and games) were some of my best friends. They took my mind off of the horrible things my dregs of my ‘peers’ would do or say. A little escapist sometimes, but it was better than succumbing to the negative thoughts that would creep up some days. It did get frustrating when I’d use words that most people wouldn’t (ex: ere, yore, frabjous) and they’d stare at me like I was insane.
… I /really/ liked reading classical literature, myths, and books such as Lord of the Rings, the occasional Poe or Shakespeare, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Growing up with that sort of vocabulary source in hindsight did me absolutely no favors…
That’s a lot of books. It reminds me of that one episode of Avatar at the library. Also, rude Skärva is rude.
It reminds me of Beauty and the Beast, when the Beast gave Belle his library. Except the Beast is a dead shark man. Or is he Belle?
I guess ghosts in Idenau are doomed to wear the clothes they died in…
Wait… that would mean Ecta is… (shudder) never mind…
Perhaps you could shed some light on this?
Ghosts age. A more recently dead ghost will appear to be more solid, an older ghost might be completely transparent. It also depends on how influential that ghost was in life. So, an important dead person will retain an image that is closer to their living appearance, for a longer amount of time. It has to do with their essence having been more powerful in life, thus being more powerful in death.
In addition to ghosts losing their opacity, they also “blur” – that is, without the solidity of the body forcing them into a rigid form, they start to merge together a bit… so you lose your pointy extremities like your fingers, your nose, etc, until you end up with Ecta and most of the other ghostly inhabitants of the castle, who have more or less stabilized. With that, the image of their clothes disappears as well, but it’s not like they have anything to hide any more.
“She’s no one important. Let’s not waste our time with her.”
Hoo boy. Not exactly the smartest thing to say to a woman…especially one to whom you owe your life multiple times!
And to think, when it comes to women, Skärva just blames his lack of success on his face and leaves it at that.
Yes… many many many many fiends…..
Grah, I meant friends.
No, that’s the Temple of Terror!
Haha, Davis is homesick.
HA, I doubt that!
How dare he say Lorelei is not important?!
Also, oh, hey, friends how are you?
My Little Novel: Friendship is Reading
I can almost imagine him singing to his books, “Do you know you are my very best FRIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNDDDDSSSS!!
N-ICE to see you all…glad to see I’m not the only snowman who likes to read, that’s a pretty cool library….I chill be around a bit sporadically, computer’s crushed and slush problems….stay frosty my friends
out of curi-ice-ity, is Skarva the first anywhere around the castle perhaps?, couldn’t the second just ASK his ghost what he did to piss the gods off?or did he drift off, or vanish like a snowball’s chances in hell? also, got a list and description of the Gods? would be n-ICE you snow, also, by being evil.. don’t the skarvas kinda keep Idenau running? if there wasn’t an evil overlord, or a clear cut enemy, it, like any country, would become a cesspit in a matter of years, it’s how things work in a sad sad way… Overlord was one of the most accurate examples of how it works.
What the First did to anger the gods is no secret, but it’s something that you can’t just undo. So if there’s any way to make it up to the gods or break the curse, it has to be something different.
There are six main gods, and they each have a personality and symbol. They also each have a day of the week, with the seventh being All Gods’ Day. I have placed them (well… the symbols) in very discrete places in the comic already! But you’ll learn more about them later…
Indeed, the Third was the perfect example of that, he really did a lot for Idenau’s economy and the whole modern system of dungeon-crawling quests. But Idenau, and the gods, need even our Fourth quite a bit… more than they realize right now.
how many friends?
I want Blank to eventually have to go into this place, and then get attacked by flying books! XD
