As a follow-up to last week, no one asked what Derk does in his spare time… but he really wanted to tell you anyway.
Hi everyone! Well, what do I do in my spare time? I guess I don’t really have very much of it! I’m usually helping Boss out and going everywhere he and Lorelei go to protect them!
Here at the castle, I’m in charge of personnel – that means I interview all potential new minions. Or rather, this guy does…
Boss gives most of the orders, but sometimes I have to make sure they’re actually getting done. I’m also the one who listens to all the complaints. And I don’t just mean from Boss, haha- oh don’t tell him I said that.
I mean from the minions! I try to resolve their conflicts when I can. It can be a little tough to get people who are supposed to be evil to work together! But I think I do a pretty good job!
Other than that, well! I read a bit sometimes. Not as much as Boss though. Sometimes I read to Lorelei and sometimes we draw, do puzzles and all kinds of other stuff! But my favorite thing is cooking!
I know we have servants to cook for us, but I just like making my own meals a lot of the time. It’s more satisfying to eat something when you made it yourself, you know! Especially bacon.
One last thing is I like to call my family when I can. My parents live across the kingdom now, so I don’t get to see them very often. But I try to call them at least once a week and keep them up to date.
But… I try not to do it when Lorelei is around. I know she says she doesn’t care, but I still feel pretty bad.
I can’t even imagine what it would be like to not know your family at all. So I want her to feel like she has a family here. I can only hope she does.
Ohhhh, baaaaaaw! Derk is such a sweetheart.
Derk is so sweet…that’s gotta be illegal.
How did he even get on Skärva’s side? I guess only time will tell.
Because, as Rin said, he was so sweet it was illegal. He had no choice but to turn to a life of villainy.
I’m going to say stuff that might not even be things. (What?)
Derk has an even higher adorable level than Lorelei. Sure, there was the end of arc sad scenes, but I mean, come on. She was going to cannon a wall. (Cannon is totally a verb)
Is it also okay to say I kinda miss almost perfectly round headed Derk?
It’s because he’s ADERKABLE
You can say you miss him, but I’m not changing him back. I guess the round head did make sense considering, uh, things… but I like him better this way.
PS: He’s also still in the banner. I need to get around to changing that, so enjoy it while it lasts
What kind of stuff does Derk read, anyway? I imagine he likes corny fairytales and other cute stuff like that, but if he’s a wizard, he must hunker down into some good, solid magical calculus occasionally.
Yeah, he does hunker down and read some of Skärva’s collection of magic theory and dungeon design literature, so he can be better at what he does. But he likes a good story with a happy ending!
Also: Deerrrrk, put Lorelei on the phone! She can have a grandma! That would be much better than just avoiding the topic.
Wait, so Lorelei has two dads?
Eh, I’d say they’re more uncles, on an emotional level.
Random questions, just so they exist!
What do ghosts do in their spare time?
What do Skærvian minions do in their spare time?
What does the princess do in her spare time?
What does BLANK do in his spare time?
What is the name of the Pirate’s ship?
Do they have more than one ship?
Is the Captain the captain of ALL the pirates in the town, or are there factions?
Is the princess the commander in chief for the Navy and such?
How often does the Captain escape from jail?
Why don’t cannons say boom all the time in the town?
Are the big three even going in the right direction for the compass yet?
If you pet Skærva on the snout, does he calm down, and has Lorelie figured it out yet?
I had some questions for you. How does your whole comic process work? I noticed that your characters are made from separate files and then put into the panels. How does to storyboard process go?
And how does the scripting process work? Does Victor make one chapter all at once, or several chapters in advance, or maybe he’s just always a page or so ahead of you?
I don’t know if this is question session material since we *usually* try to keep them about in-world questions (except for that one time), so I’ll go ahead and answer this here. I don’t feel it’s terribly interesting
Yes, I do draw all the characters separately and put them into a background like you would with animation. Basically there are two photoshop documents for each comic: the “worksheet” (which is where I draw all the characters and sometimes the backgrounds) and the comic document, which is where I stick it all together, separate it into panels and put in the text. I’m actually thinking I should get away from this and just draw each panel as one organic whole, as that’ll help me do more interesting compositions and angles perhaps.
Victor’s usually not very far ahead of me in terms of actually writing the script. And he writes out not only the text, but what I should draw, roughly, in terms of what the characters are doing and their expressions (as in “Skärva begins eating again, but with intense sadness.”). But I have lots of room for interpretation and to put in my own little details.
Very interesting! Sometimes I have to draw a few characters or background outside of the original document in order to get proportions and perspective right. Which is really irritating to me, but at least it looks good. (and then so much of it gets cut off. sigh.)
Heheheh, i remember the Intense sadness.
